The story

July 1807. To celebrate the treaties of Tilsit, Napoleon's chief of staff Berthier arranged a rabbit hunt.

The story goes that the rabbits were tame ones from farm hutches, not wild ones. When the cages opened, they took the hunters for the people who fed them and ran straight at the Emperor, over his boots, in their hundreds. He retreated to his carriage.
